“Hey… Hey, who is that Rem?”

A young Vash and Knives stared curiously at the white creature whose head was elevated onto Rem Saverem’s lap. Actually, the white creature was a girl wearing a white dress and had long golden hair, even longer than the brothers. Vash and Knives had found Rem in the Recreation Room with this new arrival dozing peacefully and unaware of her surroundings. The artificial light spilled through the trees as Rem gently stroked the girl’s hair lovingly as if comforting her own child.

“Vash, Knives! Look, we found someone new!” said their guardian, beaming up at her charges brightly.

“You found her?” Knives asked dubiously kneeling to study the girl a bit more. “Where? She’s not one of the people in cold sleep right?”

“I would have noticed her if she was. Who is she Rem?” Vash also knelt down next to Knives, obviously eager to see another face on their ship other than the usual crew members.

Rem put a finger to her lips indicating the two boys to silence themselves before whispering her answer.

“Like I said, we found her while Steve was readjusting one of the Plants. It’s a miracle really. She was lying inside some odd craft that suddenly disintegrated when she was brought in. There’s no telling how long she was inside there or how she was able to survive, but I’m grateful that she’s safe!” Rem smiled happily.

“I think she’s a wonderful addition to the crew don’t you think?”

Knives’ face was in deep thought.

“… Is she like us?” Rem’s smile was replaced by a look of slight concern.

“Well… We actually couldn’t analyze—Ah!” The girl made a noise and some movement.

“She’s waking up!” exclaimed Vash, his eyes wide with anticipation while Knives remained silent as he watched her awaken as well.

“I think I talked rather loudly since she’s waking up so soon,” Rem chuckled.

A second or two later, a pair of bright crimson eyes stared into two pairs of blue eyes. She didn’t move from her place at first. Slowly, but surely, she sat up and rubbed her eyes staring at Vash and Knives and then up at Rem. Her face was expressionless all the while with no indication of surprise or inquiry. Vash didn’t know what made him think so, but there was something in that girl’s face that made him felt sorry for her; not because she might have hidden suffering, but because there was nothing at all.

“Well good morning there!” chimed Rem, “You finally woke up! Did you rest well?” Still unresponsive, the red eyed girl merely blinked. Vash spoke up,

“Let me try Rem.” He held his hand out to her.

“I’m Vash! That lady is Rem and this is my brother Knives!” he said using his other hand to point out their companions. The girl looked the other two, then at Vash’s hand, and then at his face. Her lips moved and she repeated their names softly.

“… Vash… Rem… Knives?”

“Ah. So she can speak.” said Knives, “Now, does she have a name?”

“If you don’t have a name, that’s all right. You just got here after all!” Rem said to the girl reassuringly.

“… Arcueid.”

“Arcueid? That’s such a lovely name!” Vash and Knives glanced at each other and grinned. Without saying anything, they both somehow knew that this ship would somehow liven up with this girl’s presence and that perhaps the days ahead would at least bring something new.

“Well, Arcueid,” Vash said amiably, with a large smile still spread across his face,

“Welcome to SEEDS.”

--

Arcueid’s sudden entrance into SEEDS caused some unease among the crew members, Steve and Joey especially. Rem spent the first week talking about the issue behind closed doors with Joey. The children were oblivious—at least Vash and Arcueid were—to what was being discussed. Arcueid was left for the brothers to watch over. She sat on a chair silently showing no signs of impatience or playfulness of a child. Vash and Knives sat right across, studying her carefully.

“It’s been a week already and she still doesn’t talk much,” remarked Knives.

“I don’t think she knows if she wants to talk or not,” replied Vash. Knives shrugged and stood up from his seat.

“Huh? Knives where are you going?”

“I’m going to see if I can find out what they’re going to do with her. She’s… Not like them. Or anyone else on this ship for the matter.”

Knives ended the subject there and left the room. Vash sighed and looked at Arcueid again. She hadn’t taken notice of Knives exiting the room. Vash decided to make an attempt at talking to her again.

“Hey, Arcueid.” She drew her gaze away from the floor and settled her eyes on him.

“Yes?”

“Why don’t you talk a lot? And I noticed that when we have lunch you don’t eat a lot. Not that it’s a bad thing,” Vash hastily added afraid that he might have offended her.

Arcueid let her legs dangle from her chair as she thought of an answer to give Vash.

“… Am I supposed to talk?” she asked tilting her head slightly. The boy was rather befuddled by her question.

“Huh? Why are you asking me that?”

“I don’t know if I should talk more or not. No one ever says if that’s what I’m supposed to do. And I don’t think many people talked to me in the first place.”

“Hm… How should I put this?” Vash put on an intellectual look. Arcueid blinked once or twice.

“Well! You don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to, but…!” Vash stood up and came over to her.

“If you don’t speak, we won’t know how you feel! Rem says that actions can be louder than words, but words are still needed! And right now, I think your actions are showing us that you’re still confused, but you’re not a bad person. I kind of want you to talk more! That and everyone can do their best to make sure that you're comfortable here,” he explained.

“So in other words, just tell us how you feel and we’ll get to know you better!”

There was some impact from his explanation for Arcueid. She looked up at him, face still not showing much expression, but there was a slight glow of awe in her eyes.

“… Is it alright… If I asked you another question?” she inquired almost warily.

“Sure, fire away!”

“When you held out your hand the first time we met, what was I supposed to do?”

Vash scratched his cheek and smiled sheepishly.

“Oh, well… That’s a handshake Arcueid! You’re supposed to use your other hand and then we shake. And that means we’re friends. Well... that is if you want to be my friend," he said suddenly feeling shy.

Vash paused to see Arcueid’s response. For a moment there was awkward silence until Arcueid unexpectedly lifted up her own slender hand and held it out to Vash. He was surprised at first, but suddenly he understood. He took her hand in his and gave it a firm shake. She examined the handshake and took her other hand to cover Vash's completely which put him off guard once again.

"This is a better handshake right?" Arcueid asked with a different quality to her voice. She almost sounded amused and perhaps even excited. Vash couldn't help, but laugh at her reaction.

"Haha! I'm not so sure about that, but it's not a bad one! But don't worry about it Arcueid."

"... Vash?"

"Yeah?"

"... You're... Actually my first friend."

Vash wasn't quite sure how to reply after that.
