[Crossover AU] Once in a Crimson Moon Part 2

Title: Once In A Crimson Moon Part 2
What: AU, Trigun/Tsukihime crossover
Notes: OLD OLD OLD OLD 2010 OLD

The days passed very quickly.

Arcueid wasn't sure what to make of the time she spent on SEEDS. She knew she was in space. She was in a ship that was filled with humans, but only a few were awake to run the ship and the two boys, Vash and Knives. They were not human-- and neither was she. That much she knew. Otherwise, she could not think about her origins any further than that. It wasn’t an important issue to her at that point.

She regarded her new environment with a strange sense of apathy. The other humans aside from Rem were not quite willing to be near her at least not yet. The human named Steve was especially condescending towards her and the boys. She had no opinion on the others. Rem was the only one who went out of her way to make Arcueid feel welcome and teach her about the ship and its functions. Vash and Knives also did their part in that aspect. It was those three people—especially Vash—who she felt most comfortable with.

She did not know why she didn’t understand what made these days so special. But as the days passed, Arcueid began to open up her eyes a little bit more to the world around her--this small world that was a ship called SEEDS.

SEEDS was her home for now—A home she shared with her most precious friends.

“Arcueid!”

She stopped walking down the hall after leaving her room, rubbing one eye. Vash was jogging towards her energetically with Knives right behind him.

“Oh… Vash… Knives…” Vash caught up with Arcueid and gave her a pat on the head.

“Hey! You just woke up didn’t you?”

“You sleep so long Arcueid. You might as well go into a cold sleep,” joked Knives. Vash raised an eyebrow at that comment while Arcueid only blinked.

“C’mon Knives, that’s not funny—oh, Arcueid, you didn’t brush your hair again.”

Vash proceeded to fuss over her hair, straightening it out with his fingers while Knives looked on, amused.

“Since when did you become her parent Vash?”

“Hey, someone has to make sure she’s careful!”

Arcueid didn’t think it was necessary to keep her hair tidy, but she was secretly pleased that Vash was concerned for her well-being. When she was around him, Arcueid’s world became a little bigger. Perhaps it was because he was also learning with her under Rem’s guidance, but the point was that all of them were learning and experiencing things together. She experienced comfort, companionship, and to some extent a feeling she could not identify as happiness.

It didn’t take Arcueid long to know what pain was.

---

One day, Arcueid, the twins, and Rem walked out of the cold sleep room. Arcueid stood in between Vash and Knives, holding onto Vash’s hand as they went to have lunch as
Rem explained the importance of the sleeping humans, the children listening intently.

“When we move to our new home, we’re all going to work together to make sure everyone on the ship can settle down peacefully. We’re awake so we can keep the ship—Oh, Steve?”

Their fellow shipmate staggered down the hallway with a half-empty bottle of liquor, muttering a dull and ‘hello’ in response. Knives frowned with disapproval. Arcueid felt Vash’s grip on her hand tighten slightly. She glanced at both of the brothers aware that they had suddenly tensed up. After staying in this ship, she had already learned that Steve was not a welcome presence simply because their presence was just as unwelcome to him. Steve bitterly looked at the children and let out a drunken scoff.

“HA! So now we have three freaks on this ship. Having fun together you little monsters?”

“Steve--” Rem tried to interject, but he continued his tirade and pointed at Arcueid.

“And you! What the hell are you girly? You barely talk, eat, or do anything to help out. You mute or deaf? I don’t see why we’re letting you stay here you useless brat.”

An unexplainable sting vibrated in Arcueid’s chest and her red eyes glittered with confused hurt.

“That’s enough! Steve, you should go rest, you’ve been drinking too much,” Rem said sternly. He muttered again, but finally left the four of them alone. Vash shook his head and smiled reassuringly at Arcueid.

“Don’t worry Arcueid. I’m sure Steve didn’t mean what he said…”

“He meant every word he said to us,” Knives murmured with a bitter edge to his voice.

Arcueid could only look at the floor wondering about what had just occurred.

A few more weeks passed.

“Vash…? Vash!”

Hearing his name, Vash lifted his face from his knees to see Arcueid run over to him in the grassy Recreation Room. A bruise mark had formed on his cheek and his eyes were unbearably sad. Arcueid sat down next to him gazing at him, concerned.

“Was it Steve again Vash?” Vash sniffed and nodded wordlessly. She was silent, but leaned her head on his arm.

“I’m sorry.”

“Huh? What are you saying Arcueid? You didn’t do anything.” A shadow cast over Arcueid’s face.

“That’s why I’m sorry. I could’ve stopped him from hitting you.” Vash shook his head and tried his best to smile at her.

“Don’t be sad Arcueid. If you keep looking like that, it’ll be hard for both of us to cheer up!”

She did not answer so he spoke no more. The both of them kept quiet for a few minutes looking up at the fabricated sky as they sat underneath the blooming apple tree. Reveling in this moment of peace allowed the both of them to lift the tension off of their shoulders and actually enjoy each other’s company.

“… It doesn’t matter does it?”

“Hm? What’s on your mind Arcueid?”

“It doesn’t matter if we’re human or not right? You, me, and Knives aren’t human, but we look like the others. And we get sad and happy don’t we? What’s the difference?” Arcueid murmured.

“I’m not sure,” confessed Vash, “But Rem said that even humans had their problems with each other even if they are the same! I guess for us… Well…” The little girl considered Vash’s words carefully.

“But in the end we’re all different, but Rem says that’s a good thing. Life wouldn’t be as fun wouldn’t it? Think about it Arcueid. You said you can feel happiness right? That’s because you’re with people who are different from you and you’re not lonely anymore!” Vash pointed out cheerfully. A tiny smile appeared on her face as Arcueid cupped Vash’s injured cheek with her hand.

“Vash is right. I do like it when I’m with everyone… But…”

“But what?”

“… Nothing.”

What Arcueid wanted to say was that she simply liked being with Vash the best. But she felt that wasn’t quite fair—so she held back her words and continued resting her head on Vash’s shoulder treasuring the peace she could have with her friend.
